Abstract

Drug interactions are one of the important factors that modify the response to a drug. A drug interaction is said to occur when the effects of a drug is altered by another drugs, food, drink or an environmental chemical. Drug interactions are defined as the modifications of the effects of one drug by the prior or concomitant use of another drug. The main cases of hospital admission and mortalities are related to drug interactions and their corresponding adverse events. It has been estimated that 10 -20% of hospital admissions are caused by drug related events, and about 1% are caused by drug interactions. Drug interactions can occur both in vivo and in vitro. Drug interactions outside the body can occur when different drugs are mixed in an intravenous infusion.
